YOUNGSTERS at a sports club will enjoy their football all year round after work started on an all-weather pitch this week.

The Cleveland Hall Community Association, based at the former Lyndhurst school complex in Beacon Lough, Gateshead, is having a £160,000 football pitch built.

It is being constructed with help from a grant of almost £122,000 from The Football Foundation, the UK's largest sports charity, and support from Gateshead Council's Single Regeneration Budget, Connexions and Gateshead College.

Hundreds of local youngsters already attend regular football coaching and festivals at the site and the new pitch is expected to attract even more.

The association has also been given a coveted sports award from the Football Association for its outstanding community efforts.

The Charter Standard Community Club award was recognition by the Football Association for Cleveland Hall's good practice, involving the local community, irrespective of their age, ability, background or gender.

Cleveland Hall Boys Club, which is run solely by local volunteers, has provided football and sports facilities for over 10,000 local youngsters since 1955.
