NORA Batty is inviting people to celebrate Yorkshire Day on August 1 by joining her for a cup of tea.

Last of the Summer Wine star Kathy Staff is supporting a fundraising initiative by the charity Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Taylor's of Harrogate has donated 20,000 teabags to the charity, which is asking people to telephone them or visit their website to claim teabags in return for a donation.

The idea is that people will be able to sit in their homes or offices for an 11am cup of tea on Yorkshire Day knowing that their donation will be helping the largest regional medical research charity in the UK.

During a break from filming the next series of the BBC1 comedy, actress Kathy joined charity official Sally Crerar to pledge her support for the initiative.

"We are delighted that a much loved and admired character such as Nora has agreed to start our Tea Break off for us," said Ms Crerar.

"Although the message behind our event is a serious one we want everyone to enjoy a break for a few minutes on the 1st.

"There is so much hard work carried out by all involved in the charity and all support is appreciated."

To brew up and pledge a pound call the charity on (01423) 501269 or visit the website at www.ycr.org.uk and go to events and biggest tea break.
