Worthington Durham County CIU Summer League: Langley Park produced the shock result of the week when they travelled to Second Division leaders, Meadowfield and inflicted only the second defeat of the season on their hosts.

The Park looked to on their way to a whitewash success with wins from Stephen Coates, Robert Roche, Peter Morgan and Ray Coates but John Jackson saved the home side's embarrassment by winning the final frame.

Third Division leaders, Coundon were taken to the decider when they visited Hunwick and lost their top spot when they could only win by the odd point. Stuart Neil and Frank Nicholson put Coundon ahead but John bate and Tom Ward levelled. In the decider, Coundon's Stephen Bennett beat Des Mason.

Spennymoor A extended their lead at the top of the First Division to a massive ten points when they whitewashed their hosts at Witton Gilbert with wins from Karl Welsh, Paul Biddle, Paul Atkinson, Ronnie Bateman and Michael Pratt, who put in a 52 break.

Wheatley Hill A held on to the second place in the First Division after winning in the decider at Brandon. Dave Walker put the Hill ahead but Kevin Sample and John Hall moved Brandon in front. Alan hall levelled the match and then the visiting Ronnie Peacock beat Graham Jackson in the decider.

Spennymoor B moved up to share the second place in the Second Division with Crowtrees after they only dropped one point to the visiting Wingate. The visitors took the first frame through John Bourne. The Moors then took over with wins from Alan Clarke, Micky Anderson, Wayne Parry and Shaun Archer.

Crowtrees won their match in the decider at Stanley Central when Sean Johnston beat Norman Rimmington. Earlier the Central had wins from Harry Grimes and Jim Dufton, whilst Steven Armstrong with a 46 break and Keith McLauchlan levelled.

Bearpark took over at the top of the Third Division after they whitewashed the visiting Tow Law B with wins from Glen Morton, Shaun Easter, David Jackson, Alan Smith and Alan Donaldson. This victory moves Bearpark one point ahead of Coundon.

Newton Aycliffe moved into equal third place in the First Division with an odd point win at Fishburn A. The home side had wins from John Griffin and Alan Buist, whilst John Briddick with a 47 break and Ritchie Young levelled. In the decider the visiting Mark Howe beat Brian Quest on the black.

Shotton Palms were pulled back to share the third place in the First Division with Newton Aycliffe after they went down in the decider at Sherburn Village. The Palms went two up through wins from Paul Hickman with a 46 break and John Armstrong. Scott Mallaburn and John Bower levelled the match and then Alan Bower clinched the win for Sherburn when he beat Dave Swindle on the black.

The steady move down the First Division continued for Newhouse when they went down by the odd point to the visiting Willington. Ronnie Pearson and Paul Wright were the home winners, whilst Gordon Parkin, Jeremy Martin and Arthur Goldsborough took Willington to victory.

Crook Belle Vue pulled off their best victory of the season when they went to Durham City and only dropped one frame. The visitors had wins from John Warriner, Ken Rider, Derek Potts and Harry Coates, before Dave Carter saved the whitewash in the final frame.

New Durham moved up to third place in the Third Division, three points behind Coundon, after they scored a comprehensive maximum win over the visiting Sacriston. The home winners were Gordon Bowes, Tony Thompson, Kevin Scullion, Thomas Cairns and Phil Garr.

Tow Law raced into a winning lead against the visiting Leeholme A with wins from Alan Spence, Charlie Donaghy and Doug Watson. The visitors came back to take the last two frames through Lawrence Jones and Karl Thompson. Ken Robinson made a welcome return to league snooker for Leeholme after a long illness.

Fishburn B were never headed on their visit to Leeholme B and won in the decider. Alan Wilson put the visitors ahead but Lee Todd levelled. Jamie Hodgson restored the visitors lead only to see John Taylor level. In the decider, Fishburn's Winston Hodgson beat Ray Gill.

South West Durham Association

Bishop Auckland Golf Club maintained their three points lead at the top of the table when they only dropped one point to the visiting Darlington Riley's. Darlington Cricket Club B remain in second place after they beat the visiting Hopetown by a similar score. Bishop Auckland Cricket Club and Darlington Snooker A are a further eight points adrift.

Old Shildon moved up to share top spot with Bishop Auckland Gents A in the Second Division. These two hold a two points advantage over Barnard Castle Glaxo.

M Rhodes and D Lilley both previous finalist in the competition were drawn against each other on the opening night. What promised to be a thriller turned out exactly that, with breaks of 53, 82 and 50 from Lilley and breaks of 51, 51, and 52 from Rhodes left them at four all. the last Frame turned out to be just as tight with Lilley going into a 49-point lead only for Rhodes to come from behind to take the frame 62-53.

The second game of the evening saw Teesside individual champion A Parsons playing the young up-am-coming 14-year-old John Astley who has a 139 break against his name. Although not overwrought Astley had a hard task against Parsons, finally yielding to Parsons' experience 5-2. Wednesday's games saw Mike Dunn ranked 55 in the world against Chris West who has qualified for the main professional tour next season.

What a cracker this turned out to be with Dunn going into a 3-0 lead with breaks of 122, 89 and a 41, only for West to take the next four frames with breaks of 74, 45 and 33. Dunn got his act back together to take the eighth to tie four all and the final frame with a 96 break to take the game.

The other table had Neil Moselety ex-world and European amateur champion playing the highly talented 17-year-old Gary Wilson the English under 18 champion. Wilson started by taking the first two frames with breaks of 107 and 43. Moseley pulled one back with the third only to go 3-1 down in the fourth. Wilson went on to take the game 5-2 with a 59 break in the final frame. Ending the first week of the competition with an absolute feast of snooker for a packed audience.

Monday's games will be between P Lines (Leeds) v S Rowling (Preston) and I McCulloch (Preston) v K Johan (Leeds).

Wednesday, July 16, will be between P Davidson (Pickering) v D Craggs (Tow Law) and P Lawrence (Thornaby) v J Birch (Middlesbrough).
