FARMERS in Darlington have mounted their first daytime operation to reduce crime in rural areas.
The operation was the latest run by Darlington Rural Watch (DRW), in conjunction with police, to target poachers and farm equipment thieves.
Watch members joined Durham Constabulary's beat support unit on Sunday to carry out surveillance at several locations in the borough. The operation was timed to coincide with high crops, which can provide cover for thieves and gun-users.
Watch chairman Brian Pavey said: "It has been fairly quiet over the last few months, but nevertheless, we know these people are still going out. DRW can be effective because it is such a close-knit organisation."
