YOUNG skateboarders from Sedgefield borough will be competing for cash prizes this weekend.
Sedgefield Borough Council will hold its first summer skate jam at the Pioneering Care Centre in Newton Aycliffe on Saturday, from 11am.
Heats for the competition are taking place this week and the best skaters from Newton Aycliffe, Spennymoor, Ferryhill, Sedgefield and Fishburn will take part in the final on Saturday.
The event is being held on the council's mobile Airtime Skatepark. It is the only one of its kind in Europe and visits towns throughout the borough.
The equipment is so unusual it was impounded when it arrived at Southampton while customs officials tried to decide what it was.
Saturday's competition has categories for the under-12s and over-12s.
Winners in each category will receive cash prizes, sponsored by Sprite.
At the end of the competition, the professional Sprite SK8 team will give a demonstration.
The team will be on site throughout the day and will be running promotions and giving away T-shirts and spot prizes.
The event, at the centre near Burn Lane, is free. For more details telephone (01388) 816166 extension 4512
