THE heatwave which swept the country this week provided nursery children in Darlington with the perfect opportunity to start learning cookery skills - by enjoying a barbecue.
Children from George Dent Nursery School were told about food preparation and had the chance to sample burgers and sausages as well as healthy food such as raw carrots.
Headteacher Pat Pennington said: "One of the members of staff suggested bringing in her portable barbecue and taking advantage of the glorious weather we've been having.
"The children always enjoy taking part in any kind of activity involving food and this was especially enjoyable as it was outside."
