PUPILS travelled in stretch limos to the premier of a film in which they starred.

Twenty youngsters from Hummersea Primary School in Loftus, were taken to the town hall to see the "The Accident," a black and white silent movie about a mining accident, which they helped produce and direct.

The pupils, aged from seven to 11, became involved after a school outing to the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, which received a £5,000 grant to make a film about the lives of ironstone miners.

The museum, formerly the Tom Leonard Museum, in Skinningrove, near Loftus, decided to involve the children in the ten-minute film.

"It's been a super experience for the pupils," said headmistress Sue Thompson.

"The children scripted the film and did a lot of the research and even had a go at producing and directing.

"Some of them have grandparents and great grandparents who worked in the mine, so they've really been learning about their own heritage."

The film premiered on Monday at Loftus Town Hall along with a 30-minute film about the making of The Accident, which showed the all-child cast working together with local producer, Ben Moore and his team.

Videos of the film will be made and distributed to local schools and libraries for educational purposes.
