Middleton St George Parish Council is opposing a plan to convert Low Middleton Farm into a house.

Councillor Doris Jones told a meeting: "I would recommend we object to this application because we have run out of brown- field sites. It is agricultural land and we have got to protect it as fiercely as we can."

PARISH COUNCIL: Stanhope Parish Council will meet on Wednesday, August 6, in the town hall, at 7pm.

WASTE DAY: Wear Valley District Council is inviting people to a waste awareness event outside St Catherine's Community Centre, in Crook Market Place, on Tuesday, August 5, from 10am to 4pm.

Summer fair: St David's Church, Tudhoe, hosts a summer fete in the gardens of the old vicarage, on Sunday, from 2pm. There will be games, bouncy castle and various stalls.

LIGHT WORK: A whist drive in aid of the Staindrop Christmas lights appeal takes place tomorrow, at 2pm, in Scarth Hall, Staindrop.

SCHOOL PROJECT: Darlington Borough Council has given approval for the Dewjoc company to design and create the new Alderman Leach Primary School, to be built on the town's West Park development.

FUN DAY: A fun day with a wildlife theme is being held at The Whinnies nature reserve, off the A67 between Middleton St George and Teesside Airport, tomorrow. The event is held between 10.30am and 3.30pm and has been arranged by Darlington Borough Council's countryside team.

TREE FELLING: An application to fell two trees included within a tree preservation order in Cobden Street, Darlington, has been submitted to the borough council.

NEW FACES: Stuart Crowther has been co-opted on to Middleton St George Parish Council. It also has a new clerk, Mike Taylor.
