A PAIR of up-and-coming DJs from Richmond will be putting their mixing skills to the test next month after scooping the top two prizes in a regional competition.

North Yorkshire County Council held a contest for up-and- coming artists from across the county earlier this month, challenging the heat winners to take to the stage in a showcase final at Tadcaster Grammar School.

Peter Kipling, 19, of Richmond, was placed second overall in the category for disc-jockeys - but friend Tom Collingburn, 20, went one better, beating off competition from 130 others to take the Connecting Youth Culture title.

Next month, both will be back on stage in front of thousands at the Richmond Live open-air music festival on Friday, August 1, and Saturday, August 2.

"I had listened to what everyone else had done and was the only to choose drum and bass music for my final set," said Tom. "To be honest, I was more nervous at the semi-finals than I was at the weekend."

Tom is self-taught at the decks - although he admits he was inspired by 25-year-old big brother, James.

The two will be reunited at Richmond Live, with James joining Tom and Peter on stage for what could be their big break.

Meanwhile, Tom is hoping to make a living from his talent and is willing to take bookings for functions. He can be contacted on (07732) 814664.
