POLICE have renewed calls for better security at Teesside International Airport after more vehicle break-ins.

Earlier this month, police chiefs revealed that the airport was a hot-spot for car crime and improved security in the car park was needed.

Yesterday, Inspector Dennis Dixon, of Darlington police, said car criminals were still operating.

He said: "Some holidaymakers got back from abroad and found that somebody had tried to steal their VW Golf this week. It's something that's causing real problems.

"We get a lot of crime at the airport and we are taking steps to work with the airport to improve security."

Middleton St George Parish Council was told this week about two car thefts at the airport and four break-ins.

Airport commercial manager Richard Whitehouse said: "We are aware of the problem and we are trying to work with police to eradicate it."
