RECORDS tumbled last week as a Bedale Golf Club member produced some amazing form to capture national and local prizes.
Gillian Petrie first travelled down to Denham Golf Club in Buckinghamshire a week last Monday to compete in one of four Ladies Golf Union gold medal finals.
Up against a strong field of 100 women golfers from around the country, the 42-year-old mother of two equalled the course record with a gross 69 and her net score of 64 brought her the gold medal.
Two days later, she returned to her home club to set a new course record as rounds of 75 and 69 won her the club championship.
Mrs Petrie, whose husband Bob is also a Bedale member, has been playing golf since the age of five. She hails from Scotland and also set a course record of 69 at Ballater in Aberdeenshire.
She told the D&S Times that her success in the national competition came as a complete surprise and her results during the week have seen her handicap reduced from five to three.
Mrs Petrie has been a member at Bedale for four years and is also part of the four-strong team which has reached the seventh round of the national Mail on Sunday competition.
The team, which also includes Sue Mayman, Mavis Burton and Julia Doughty, came through a close sixth round encounter with Bingley St Ives.
The thrilling match ended in a draw after 18 holes, but Bedale progressed when Julia Doughty sank the winning putt on the third hole of a sudden death play-off match.
