THE Port of Tyne has achieved a new European environmental standard.
The port is only the third to be awarded the Port Environmental Review System (PERS) certification, developed and validated as part of the EcoPorts Project.
The project, funded by the European Commission, developed the initiative as part of its goal to harmonise the environmental management of European ports.
Melissa Denton-Hawkes, director of corporate services at the Port of Tyne, and member of the British Ports Association Environmental group, said: "The port has always taken its environmental responsibilities very seriously and undertakes a wide range of sustainable actions to improve environmental practice.
"We are very proud to be one of the first ports to receive this environmental accreditation."
Examples of environmental best practice within the Port of Tyne include the Tyne Dock recycling scheme, waste minimisation, river clean-up, and hosting environment days.
