PUPILS at Saltburn have been busy making the place ship-shape ready for Britain in Bloom judges.

Huntcliff School took delivery of an un-seaworthy fishing boat from Marske after Jackie Taylor from the Saltburn in Bloom group asked if they would like to get involved.

Assistant head Val Clayden, said that last week groups of 11 to 15-year olds were busy painting the coble, which they have named Spirit of Huntcliff.

This week the coble has been moved to its permanent position and pupils have filled it with rubble and soil and planted it up ready for the judges.

"I think the youngsters got the idea for the name from another boat in the town called the Spirit of Saltburn," Mrs Clayden explained.

"The boat is very eye catching and we want to link other things to it. As a school we want to be part of the town, part of the community and this is also a reminder for the youngsters of what Saltburn used to be about.

"We want them to take pride in their community and for them to take some responsibility. Later in the year we will plant some trees and flowers elsewhere to improve the environment."
