THE process of reinvention undergone by former industrial areas in the North-East will be portrayed in a work of art to be unveiled later this year
A Free and Anonymous Monument, by artists Jane and Louise Wilson, is a multi-screen film installation, commissioned by the Baltic, in partnership with Film and Video Umbrella.
The installation, one of the artists' most ambitious works to date, examines the process of reinvention through the use of architecture and its automated industry.
Among the sites investigated were: The Apollo Pavilion, Peterlee; Gateshead Carpark; Atmel, North Tyneside; Cummins engine works, Darlington; and an offshore oil rig - which can all be seen as significant symbols of urban redevelopment and regeneration in the North East.
The artists work together on video installations and photography, which typically explore relationships between people and architectural space.
The commission will tour internationally following its showing at the Baltic from September 13 to November 30.
