EVERTON want to take Gavin McCann back to Goodison - but only if Sunderland halve their £3m asking price.

After all but giving up hope of prising Sean Davis from Fulham, Everton manager David Moyes is keen to sign McCann.

But he will not pay what Sunderland are currently demanding as he looks to spend his £3.5m summer transfer kitty prudently.

McCann, who swapped Merseyside for Wearside in 1998, is understood to be enthusiastic about a possible return to the Blues.

Northern Echo SPORT first revealed Everton's interest in 25-year-old McCann in February.

Since then, Moyes has tried and seemingly failed to lure Davis to Goodison - prompting him to turn his attention to McCann.

Everton would receive 25 per cent of any fee above £1.5m that Sunderland might receive for the midfielder.

Moyes reckons McCann is worth £1.5m and has admitted he would not spend what he perceives as over the odds for the former England international.

Moyes said: "Gavin McCann is a player that I've made an enquiry about, but Sunderland's valuation of him is way above ours.

"That's how it is, but he's a player that we admire and it's true that we're interested in him.

"I think everyone is trying to make some moves in the transfer market and we're no exception."

Rangers have become the latest club to be considering a bid for Kevin Phillips.

Ibrox manager Alex McLeish is prepared to pay £2m for Phillips, and it is believed talks have already taken place between Phillips' representatives and the Scottish champions.

Phillips has already been linked with Middlesbrough, Tottenham Hotspur, Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth this summer.

However, Rangers would not be able to waive further money owed by Sunderland for Tore Andre Flo in a direct exchange for Phillips.

It is understood the Black Cats owe a lot less for Flo, who moved from Glasgow last August, than the £3m figure that has been quoted.

Aston Villa manager David O'Leary has confirmed he is interested in Thomas Sorensen as he looks for a new goalkeeper.

O'Leary is weighing up a possible move for Sorensen after missing out on Leeds United's Paul Robinson last month.

He said: "I believe we need to boost the goalkeeping side of things at the club.

"That's no reflection on Peter Enckelman or Stefan Postma, and I would be happy to start with whoever shows up better in pre-season. But I'd have loved to have got Robinson, and I like Sorensen very much as well."
