A scheme by Knaresborough Town Council to build a music pavilion and stage in the town's castle grounds should be given the go ahead, according to planners.

The pavilion would be made with a natural timber floored stage and reached by three steps and the design has raised no objections from English Heritage. Members of a Knaresborough area planning committee will decide the application tomorrow. Knaresborough Civic Society, which has made a substantial cash award to what is being called the Jubilee Performance Area, are backing the scheme.

SCHEME APPEAL: A development company has lodged an appeal with the Department of the Environment over planners' refusal of a Harrogate housing scheme. Cala Homes (Yorkshire) Ltd is appealing after its planning application was turned down for five terrace homes with detached double garage and car port at Firs Road, off Leeds Road. The site is opposite Harrogate Racquets Club. It was the third time a development had been proposed on the site of a current detached property.

RECRUITs DRIVE: Army recruiters will be out on the streets of York tomorrow. Members of the York-based 2 Signals regiment will be in St Sampson's Square between 9am and 4.30pm to talk about life in the forces. For more information call (01904) 623653.

MORE PARKING: Work starts on Tuesday on extending the Friar's Way car park in Scarborough to provide 23 extra spaces. The whole project, which involves pulling down some disused council-owned buildings, is expected to take eight weeks.

UNIT CLOSURE: Whitby's Sea Cadet Unit faces closure after 107 years unless volunteers are found to run it within the next month. Anyone able to help is asked to ring Tom Sanders on (01947) 600827.
