A NORTH Korean flag flew from a North-East town hall at the weekend to mark the anniversary of a football match that made history.

It was July 19, 1966, that Pak Do Ik, the North Korean number seven, scored a magnificent World Cup goal against Italy at Ayresome Park in Middlesbrough.

The goal meant the football minnows sent the mighty Italian team home in disgrace, earning respect from people in Middlesbrough.

Ever since that day, people from the town have given surviving members of the team a warm welcome on their return visits.

During one visit, goalscorer Pak Do Ik said: "I learnt that football is not only about winning. Wherever we go, playing football can improve diplomatic relations and promote peace."

Last year, eight former players visited the town for a sportsman's dinner at the current home of Middlesbrough Football Club, the Riverside Stadium, hosted by England 1966 World Cup winner Jack Charlton.

A decision was taken to mark the date of the match this year with the national flag of the winning team flying over the town.

Peter Hodgson, who helped organise the event, said: "We hope that July 19 becomes a date which is remembered fondly, both locally and nationally.

"July 19, the name Pak Do Ik, and the importance of North Korea's World Cup victory on that day in 1966 is very significant in World Cup history and we hope that this is fully appreciated."
