A VISITOR attraction dedicated to glassmaking has been awarded £726,000 by the Arts Council.

The National Glass Centre (NGC) in Sunderland has had mixed fortunes, including financial problems and cracks which appeared in the glass roof not long after the building opened in June, 1998.

Now the centre, under new chief executive Vicky Nicholls, plans to to use the money to attract more visitors through updated interactive displays and new exhibition areas.

Peter Fidler, chairman of the centre and vice-chancellor of Sunderland University, said: "With a new chief executive and reconfirmed stakeholder support, the National Glass Centre is on the point of achieving stability and the renewed prospect of a secure and exciting future.''

James Bustard, head of visual arts for the Arts Council England North-East, said: "This funding reflects Arts Council England's belief that the NGC is a valuable cultural asset, whose work in the region and nationally is of great importance.''
