Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers: A bumper turnout 32 Harriers were among the 184 finishers in the latest Harrogate League Road Race on Wednesday over a two-lap course around the streets of Thirsk.

Once again the temperatures were very high but Ian Fisher of Otley AC managed to complete the course of just over five miles in 26.30 minutes.

Others: Richard Hall finished 9th in 29.06, Cameron Choules 21st in 30.12, John Yates 26th in 30.32, Merv Burn 38th in 31.18, Paul Goacher 44th in 31.35, David Grainger 48th in 31.59, Richard Soper 55th in 32.38, Stewart Mechie 62nd in 33.32, Dave Jestin 65th in 33.41. Angela Hayward was the first lady Harrier to finish, and 2nd lady overall, in 67th place in 33.53 with William Barker not far behind in 33.59. Caroline Pollard came in 81st in 35.06, Stuart Winter 87th in 35.20, David Read 90th in 35.38, Anthony Riley 91st in 35.48, Stephan Tomaszewski 95th in 36.06, William Hayward 96th in 36.13, Alan Wikeley 101st in 36.38, David Shorrocks 105th in 36.48, Stuart Butterworth 111th in 37.22, Hywel Smith 113th in 37.38, Steve Harrison 126th in 38.43, Pat Kirby 141st in 40.01, Kaye Mechie 143rd in 40.23, Nicola Thorpe 150th in 41.25, Ian Codling 152nd in 41.38, Catherine Lumb 153rd in 42.09, Fiona Wilson 161st in 43.53, Sarah Somers 162nd in 44.09, Jo Fambeley 167th in 46.54, Marian Codling 175th in 50.33 and Chris McAleenan 177th in 50.51.

On another scorching hot day several Harriers competed in a seven mile Road Race at Kilburn, part of the Kilburn Feast celebrations, over an altogether hillier course!

Others: Stephan Tomaszewski finished in 28th place in 50.18, Alan Harman 50th in 53.55, Paul Goacher 65th in 56.40, Catherine Lumb 104th in 62.46, Alan Hutchinson 107th 63.30, Ian Codling 112th in 64.24, Nicola Thorpe 115th in 65.12, Sarah Somers 121st in 68.03 and Marian Codling 145th in 69.25. The 148 finishers all enjoyed a well earned ploughman's lunch sitting by the beck in Kilburn.

The Harewood Chase 10K, a multi terrain event, was run in two sections, with men and women running separately. John Yates was the 15th man to finish, in 37.13, Stephan Tomaszewski 35th in 40.42, Martin Frith 40th in 41.27, Alan Harman 53rd in 43.56, and Ian Codling 90th in 51.39. In the Ladies' event Emma Tullett came third, behind two runners from Valley Striders, in 35.45 minutes.Catherine Lumb was 30th in 51.57 and Marian Codling 43rd in 60.35. There were 98 male and 48 female finishers.

The Midsummer 10K produced a personal best time of 45.17 minutes for Nigel Morgan. Apologies to Nigel for missing his name off an earlier report - he finished in 65th place!

Newton Aycliffe

George Reid chose the very tough Masham half marathon to make his debut over the 13.2 mile distance on July 5.

George had a fine run to come home in 1hr 30min, 30 seconds ahead of the strong finishing Michael O' Sullivan.

On July 8, Dave McKenzie and Ray Todd went to New Marske for the Coast road summer 5k race. Ray, the club's only over 65 runner, had a magnificent race to finish in 22.39 not far behind Dave McKenzie finished in 22.50.

Peter and Sue Milburn took off to Whitby for the Egton Gooseberry seven mile run on June 29. On a very hot day and on an undulating course Peter came second in the run with a time of 43.07. Sue also put on a good performance to be first lady finisher in 6th place in 50.10.

At the Croft Pit Stop 10k race on July 9 four of the club's runners competed. Adam Gibson finished in 22nd place in 41minutes, Colin Gibson battled the hot and humid conditions to finish in 25th place in 42 minutes, Michael Rippon next in 35th place in 44 minutes and Dave Thompson finished in 67th place in 55 minutes.

Congratulations to Karl Edwards who helped raise £700 for the Butterwick Hospice on June 21. Karl, who lives in Redworth, and is a member of the Hartlepool Burn Road Athletic club cycled 140 miles on a multi terrain route from Whitehaven to Sunderland in one day.

Karl, who pushed his endurance to the limit, said after 90 miles it was shear mental strength that kept him going, but it was well worth it to raise money for such a good cause.

Middlesbrough AC

The club's senior men's team turned in another magnificent performance to increase their lead at the top of the NML Division Two and are almost certain to make the play-offs for Division One needing only a point in the final match at Clairville next month.

Middlesbrough's young sprinters won in outstanding form with Peter Vickers again winning over 100m and Dean Daniel following the previous weekend's record breaking exploits won his 100m as he prepared for the English Schools championships.

Martyn Gordon starred with four victories winning over both 200m and 400m as well as running in both winning relay squads. Stephen Gill warmed up for the English Schools with a win over 400m and in the relay with Stephen Pogue, also Sheffield-bound, won a fast 800m. Martin Hood won the 1500m.

There were more wins in the jumps. Jordan Jefferson and Andrew Patten claimed maximum points in the long jump with James Herring and Paul McNally winners of the high jump events and Dale Jordan won the pole vault following his success in the previous week's ESAA Decathlon when he qualified for the final in September.
