TEENAGERS from across the North-East are getting the chance to sample student life to whet their appetites for higher education.

About 100 children aged 15 and 16 from 39 secondary schools across the region are staying in halls of residence at the University of Teesside.

They arrived yesterday and will be staying until Friday to take part in the university's free higher education summer school.

The pupils will get to explore a diverse range of subjects as well enjoying a good social life with cinema visits, bowling trips and a formal dinner.

Sharon Bimson, organiser of the summer school, said: "We have tailored the week for students who are less familiar with higher education.

"It's going to be an action-packed week and students will certainly not have time to get bored.

"The summer school will help them see that university is for anyone and everyone who has the ability to go."

The youngsters will complete group research projects to develop their team building, communication and analytical skills.

They will also look at the range of career options available through university study by visiting Teesside's careers service.
