A WOMAN who was struck by a car as she walked along a motorway was in a stable condition in the University Hospital of North Durham last night.

The 21-year-old, from Ferryhill, County Durham, suffered serious head and leg injuries in the collision, involving a Fiat car, on the A1(M) on Saturday night.

It is understood she was in a party returning from a night out at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium, but left the vehicle near the Durham Services, at Bowburn, following a row with her boyfriend.

Police were already on their way to the scene when the accident happened because an off-duty officer had reported a woman sitting in the outside lane of the northbound carriageway. The accident took place minutes later on the nearside lane.

Witnesses are asked to contact Durham Police accident unit on 0191-386 4929.
