MORE than 120 skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX bikers turned out for the final of a week-long competition.
The Airtime Summer Sk8 Jam, organised by Sedgefield Borough Council, was a big success and is set to become an annual event.
The competition had been gathering momentum all week with children selected for the final from the sites across the borough, in Chilton, Spennymoor, Fishburn, Woodham and Newton Aycliffe.
The final was staged at the Pioneering Care Centre, Newton Aycliffe, on Saturday. Children and their parents were out in force to cheer the Airtime contestants on in the final.
James Pratt, six, from Shildon, showed no fear when he attacked the ramps with the flare of an accomplished boarder.
Although he battled against competitors six years his senior in the under-12s section, James finished in a very creditable third place.
Throughout the day the competition sponsors, Sprite, provided drinks plus cash prizes of £200 and a selection of digital videodiscs and T-shirts.
Matthew Bradley, of Chilton, was presented with a high quality maple skateboard, after beating off competition from eight other competitors in the over-12s section.
The Sedgefield Borough Council mobile skate park now has more than 360 members throughout the borough and is always looking to attract new members.
Membership is £1 and details of the skate park can be found at www.sedgefield.gov.uk/airtime, or telephone (01388) 816166, extension 4412.
