A school has beaten stiff competition to win the final of the Tees Valley Maths Challenge.

Acklam Grange in Middlesbrough came top out of five schools, from each borough of the Tees Valley, in a contest that involved theoretical as well as practical tasks.

The challenge, organised by learn2work, the Education Business Link organisation for Tees Valley, aims to raise pupils awareness of maths in the workplace in an exciting, practical way.

The schools in the challenge represented their area in a range of innovative challenges and activities designed by local businesses.

Practical and theoretical challenges included a game similar to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, an engineering problem solving session, a mini bridge challenge and a colourful maths task involving recycling.

Acklam Grange contestant Rachel Grande said: "The challenges were quite difficult but we worked really well together as a team.

"I think it helped that we took our time and had good communication between the group. It's been a good experience and we've enjoyed both the heats and the final."

Second were High Tunstall, from Hartlepool, followed by Conyers School, Stockton, Carmel RC Technology College, Darlington, and Sacred Heart RC Comprehensive School, from Redcar & Cleveland.
