Dave Ogilvie's scrapbook includes a photograph of a young boxer squaring up to George Taylor, long time former head of sport at Tyne Tees Television.

Other familiar faces include the late George Wardle, one of the region's top football coaches, Bob Farrelly - Bishop Auckland FC's physio in Amateur Cup glory days - and Dave himself.

The youngster never made much of a boxer - "never looked like he would," says Dave - but made his name elsewhere. He's David Harker, now chief executive of Durham County Cricket Club.

The photograph was taken in the early days of Durham City Boxing Club. "We had no gym and no kit apart from some gloves which dated back to after the war - and they were the good ones," says David Harker. "It was really only Dave Ogilvie's enthusiasm which kept it going."

Later he joined Peterlee and Houghton ABC, but failed the medical because of eyesight problems.

"I retired undefeated, but that's because I never had a fight. I'm sure I'd have won if I had had, and there's no one who can prove otherwise."

Dave Ogilvie might. "Let's just say he could have been a boxer than I would have been a cricketer," says the old campaigner.

The chief exec didn't play cricket either, took boxing coaching badges and played football and golf - "both to an atrocious standard."

Administration? "I hope I'm a bit better at that."
