Junior round up: Cleveland Comets and Durham Spartak met at Billingham Forum Ice Arena in a recreational game.

Both teams were looking for a victory after tasting defeats a week ago when facing Northern Ireland Prowlers.

Spartak had the better of the early exchanges and went ahead at 04:03. John Hodgson driving the puck home for his first goal of the season following good work by Graeme Allan.

It did not take the home side too long to draw level as two minutes later Mark Lavender was on target with Comets short handed.

Spartak picked up several penalties in the first period and Comets could not capitalise with netminder Neale Seccombe making some fine saves. Three minutes into the middle period Spartak fell behind when Scott Williams struck for Comets. Cleveland again being short-handed.

After two periods, Comets had a 2-1 advantage having outshot Spartak by 37-15.

Spartak with a smaller squad than Comets were down to only seven skaters by the start of the final period but it was they that had more determination. Michael Anderson tied the scores for 2-2 at 48.15 and seven minutes later took a 3-2 advantage. John Stanger scoring his first goal of the season at 55:20.

However, just 26 seconds later Comets had pegged the scores back to 3-3 thanks to a Craig Scrith strike. Both sides went in search of a winner and it came and went in favour of the visitors. Anderson on target in the 57th minute.

Comets Scorers: Craig Smith 1+1, Mark Lavender and Scott Williams 1+0, James Parrish and Andy Ford 0+1.

Spartak Scorers: Michael Anderson 2+0, John Hodgson and John Stanger 1+0, Anthony Parkin and Graeme Allon 0+2, Matt Smith and Ian Spraggon 0+1.

Whitley Bay made a 90 minute presentation on Saturday at Bracknell before a selection committee of the Findus British National league a four man FBNL panel of two board members and two executive committee members heard the proposals of the two man EUNA sport representatives.

They will now have to wait until next week to hear if their application has been accepted.

A EUNA sports spokesman said "We felt we made a good impression and there are just a couple of things that they FBNL need clarifying which should not harm chances of being accepted."

The spokesman continued: "Our preparations are well underway and have met some of the local players we would be looking to acquire."

A poll amongst Whitley fans preferred the team to be known as Whitley Blackhawks a EUNA sports spokesman agreed with the name. "not only does the name fit in with the Indian theme that has always been a feature of ice hockey teams in Whitley but also provides an opportunity to bring back the "Indian Head" logo that was synonymous with ice hockey during the years of the Heineken league when Whitley Warriors played in the top flight."
