James Freeman from Retford followed his opening 65 with a two under par 68 to lead the field at the half way stage of this year's North of England Open Amateur Youth Golf Championship at Middlesbrough Golf Club.

With conditions still difficult due to the hard ground Dale Smith, 1 15-year old from Saltburn Golf Club was defying the course as he was four under par standing on the 17th tee but two bogeys gave him a 68 to follow his first round 68.

The most unfortunate golfer of the day was Darren Rix from Malton and Norton whose two iron broke during the stroke on the fifth tee and whose ball went backwards and hit his golf bag and was therefore playing his fourth shot from five yards behind the tee. Fifty one players will contest the final two rounds today for the MacGill Challenge Trophy.
