UP TO 1,000 children and parents participated with international folk dancers and came face to face with exotic animals and creepy crawlies at a fun day yesterday.

The event outside Hardwick Community Centre on Stockton's Hardwick estate was hailed a success by organisers.

"It's been hectic and we're melting with the heat - but it's been worth it," said Dianne Casey. "We're so pleased with the response and estimate the turnout as more than the usual 500 and may be as much as 1,000.

"The animals in our zoo lab had to go a bit early but they were a big success and we had a bug man with all sorts of creepy crawlies, dancers from the folklore festival at Billingham, a fire engine, puppets and loads of other things."

The event, at High Newham Road field, outside the community centre, was sponsored by Action Team for Jobs and Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest. Organisers, Hardwick in Partnership Ltd, also arranged a number of fundraising events including a race night.

"The fun day engages the community and is an important way to celebrate Hardwick's heritage and uniqueness," said a spokesman.
