A £70,000 programme of work due to start next month will see the region's first translucent water slide installed.

The Dolphin Centre, in Darlington, is undergoing a series of improvements in the next few weeks.

The new slide, featuring water jets, is believed to be the only translucent water slide in the North-East and will replace the curly slide.

The existing slide, which has been in place for more than 15 years, has been out of action since April.

The Dolphin Centre's toddler pool will also undergo work and will become an "interactive centre" for toddlers, with new features including water jetting mushrooms, frogs and whales.

Work on the project will be carried out during the night to minimise disruption to centre users during the day.

Throughout the works all the pools, except the toddler pool, will remain open.

Work is expected to take about three weeks.

Eleanor Lister, the council's cabinet member for leisure, said: "The new slide and improved toddler pool will offer even more great attractions for visitors to the Dolphin Centre."
