EAGER shoppers were able to get their first glimpse of the new Wilkinson store in Bishop Auckland when it opened 30 minutes ahead of schedule yesterday.
The grand opening of the long-awaited store was early after bosses felt they could wait no longer to show it to the public.
The store is the final touch to the £2m redevelopment of the town's Newgate Centre.
Traders are hoping it will attract more shoppers to the north end of the town.
The venture has also led to 80 jobs being created.
Chairman Tony Wilkinson, son of the company founder, opened the chain's 224th shop, at 8.30am, surrounded by the staff.
Manager Keith Short said: "We just couldn't wait any longer and everything was ready so we opened early.
"We are absolutely delighted to bring Wilkinson value for money shopping to Bishop Auckland."
Wilkinson's opening celebrations will continue today with face painting for children.
