A DEAF awareness course for public sector workers proved to be a success.

Ryedale District Council and Central Ryedale Community Education, in North Yorkshire, worked in partnership to launch the class last October.

The idea was to enable officials from the council, housing associations and police to communicate more effectively with the deaf community.

Those who attended are now celebrating after passing their level one exams in British sign language.

Customer and support manager Mandy Lightfoot said: "Not only has it enabled these officers to communicate with the deaf community, it has been a very successful team building exercise, not only cross-departmentally, but across the organisations."

The class consisted of Betty Armstrong, Hilary Bridgmount, Michelle Cohen, Ruth Morse, and Elizabeth Walton, from Ryedale District Council; Glynis Allen, from North Yorkshire Police, and Paula Morris, from Yorkshire Housing.
