A DRIVER has told how he saw a car drift into the path of an oncoming vehicle in an accident which caused the death of a Newton Aycliffe man.

David Cameron, from St Andrew's Court, Woodham, died from his injuries 12 days after the accident on the A689, near Rushyford, in February.

The 55-year-old's Peugeot 306 car was in collision with a Ford Mondeo, travelling in the opposite direction. His wife, Maureen, suffered a fractured breastbone in the accident.

Yesterday, Kieran Prentice, from Norton, told the inquest in Bishop Auckland he saw the Mondeo drift into the path of Mr Cameron's car and that he had to swerve between the cars to avoid being involved.

Mrs Cameron told South-West Durham Coroner Colin Penna she could not recall anything about the accident.

The driver of the Mondeo, Doreen Dowd, from the Station Pub, St Helen Auckland, told police she did not believe she had crossed on to the other side of the road.

At the inquest she said she did not want to add to a statement read out by PC Malcolm Thomas, of Durham Police Accident Unit.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
