THE life expectancy and appropriate treatment for people diagnosed with a brain tumour will be more accurately judged thanks to a recent research project.
Funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, Dr Janice Royds and her colleagues have found a marker for predicting how some tumours will behave.
The marker, called the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres, will help doctors make a more accurate diagnosis and prognosis of a patient's tumour
"Our study looked at the length of telomeres within a person's DNA in brain cancer and found that those who lived longer had long telomeres, while those with a shorter survival rate had short telomeres," said Dr Royds.
