THE man behind the rescue of the North's last working seaside pier, has retired.
Peter Lane, assistant director of culture and tourism at Redcar and Cleveland Council, was one of the guiding lights behind the successful refurbishment of Saltburn Pier.
"When I set out in planning, everyone had this great altruistic sense of wanting to do something that would enhance people's lives and I suppose that after one or two things I've done, I can say I've helped," said Mr Lane, who worked in local Government for 32 years.
His greatest satisfaction was helping to secure National Lottery funding to ensure the long-term future of Saltburn Pier.
Mr Lane, whose wife, Wendy, is a teacher, is looking forward to spending more time walking the North York Moors and using his experience to take on consultancy work in tourism and planning
