SHEER determination has resulted in teenager Malcolm Barwick being a successful learner.
Difficulties in expressing himself meant the 19-year-old, who lives in Billy Row, Crook, had little success at school and college.
But with a love of the outdoors, and help from staff at the Stanhope Community Association, Malcolm has now gone on to gain a Gold Award in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, a Basic Expedition Leadership Award and an NVQ Level 2 in Youth Work.
His hard work paid off because he recently won a County Durham Lifelong Learning Award for outstanding achievement and dedication to personal success through learning.
Malcolm said: "I like working outdoors and especially enjoy the youth work because I am helping people my age and younger to learn more about outdoor pursuits like camping and hiking."
Billy Hunt, who nominated Malcolm for his award, said: "Malcolm has had difficulties in the past of expressing himself but he has persevered with courses that have been quite academic for him.
"He needs a lot of support but given that he can and will succeed and other young people should model themselves on his determination to get there.
