A CHARITY set up in memory of murdered backpacker Caroline Stuttle is in the running for an award.

Caroline's Rainbow Foundation was set up by Marjorie Stuttle, her son, Richard, and partner David following the death of the 19-year-old in Bundaberg, Australia, in April last year.

The teenager, from York, had been on a gap year holiday, travelling with a friend, before taking up her place at university.

Her body was found under a bridge in the Queensland town and an Australian man has since been charged with murder and is awaiting trial.

The charity launched by her family aims to help backpackers abroad by providing them with a bed for the night or financial help if they get into trouble.

The foundation is one of only four charities that has been selected for the UK Charity Awards shortlist.

Mrs Stuttle said yesterday: "We're absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted because everyone has worked so hard with the charity. We've had so much help from people."

The awards ceremony will be held on September 3.
