A FIVE-DAY youth festival for the young people of Newton Aycliffe is in full swing.

The Momentum Youth Festival has been organised by the Christian Life Centre to provide a range of activities during the summer holidays.

The event starts on Tuesday with sports at Hope House in Horndale, the Turbinia pub on the Agnew estate and in Woodham Park.

Hope House hosted a series of workshops yesterday, which included football, drumming and guitar playing. The event, which continues today, attracted about 50 youngsters.

An evening concert is taking place each evening at the church in Woodham, which includes dance music, a rock group, comedy talk show and competitions.

An outdoor concert will be held in the church car park on Friday and Saturday, with live music and dance acts.

The festival will culminate at the church on Saturday evening with The Main Event, which includes a live DJ, rodeo bull, bungee run and refreshments.

About 200 young people are expected to attend the event, which starts at 7.30pm and is free.

The event has been inspired by the young people at the church, many of whom have taken a week off work or given up their free time to take part in organising events.
