People who want to look after their heart are being urged to join an exercise class in Consett.

The classes take place at the St John Ambulance Hall every Wednesday, between 7pm and 8pm, and are for those who have suffered heart attacks, or wish to keep fit. The sessions cost £1.50 and include a cardio-vascular workout. For more details, ring (01207) 506952.

BEACH PARTY: Chester-le-Street Sure Start is holding a beach party for pre-school children at Pelton Fell Memorial Park, on Tuesday, from 10am to 2pm. Families should take a picnic and there will be a fancy dress competition and games.

ROOF EXTENSION: Durham City Council is being asked to grant planning permission for a second-storey pitched roof extension to be built at the side of a house in Belgrave Avenue, Coxhoe.

FOOTBALL BONANZA: The Hilda Park Small-Sided Tournament takes place at Perkinsville Recreation ground, near Chester-le-Street, on Saturday and Sunday. The event is for teams of players aged between seven and 12. The events start at 10am and finish at 3pm and sides from across the North-East will be taking part. Trophies will be presented at the end of the tournament.

COUNTRY WALK: Voluntary countryside ranger Margaret Coddington will lead a five-mile walk on Saturday, at 11am, from the layby near the post box off the A177 at High Shincliffe. The walk costs £2 (concessions £1).

BAG SNATCH: A 76-year-old woman had her handbag snatched by a teenager in Tosson Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle, on Monday lunchtime. It follows an incident there eight days previously when a 72-year-old had her bag snatched by two youths.
