A DATE has been set for a meeting between protestors and two authorities about a waste transfer station.

Representatives from Teesdale District Council and Durham County Council will meet residents from Stainton Grove, near Barnard Castle, County Durham, to discuss the controversial waste transfer station on Wednesday.

Tony Cooke, chairman of the Stainton Grove Action Group, said the meeting should have taken place over a year ago.

He said: "This is something we have been asking for for 15 months.

"It will give the residents a chance to put their points across.

"In the past, Durham County Council and Teesdale have been playing one off against the other.

"This is the first time all the parties have sat round the table together. Hopefully we will be able to have some meaningful dialogue."

The meeting was arranged after Stainton Grove resident John Greaves chained himself to Teesdale council offices on Wednesday and refused to move until he was given written confirmation of the meeting.

Mr Cooke said: "It is the residents who have to put up with this for the rest of their lives.

"Councillors come and go, but we have to live on the estate."

The meeting is at Stainton Grove Community Centre at 5.30pm.
