ANIMAL welfare officers have been sickened by a "malicious act of cruelty" against a rabbit.

The animal was found bleeding in the road at noon on Thursday after having half of its ears sliced off.

A member of the public discovered the male rabbit in Bewick Crescent, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, and contacted the RSPCA.

Inspector Gary Palmer said: "Its ears have been sliced off with a pair of scissors, a knife or some other sharp object.

"The suffering that this animal has been put through is disgraceful.

"It's still alive, but it's in a state of shock and we're hoping that it pulls through.

"Whoever has done this needs bringing to a court for it because this is an absolutely malicious act of cruelty."

The brown rabbit has obviously been a pet at some point because it has been well looked after.

It is currently on a drip at the Wilson Veterinary Group practice in Neville Parade, Newton Aycliffe.

Veterinary surgeon Louise McLean, who has been caring for it, said: "He's still very shocked and traumatised with what he's been through.

"Rabbits are one of those animals that will tend to fade away and die after an event like this because they're very prone to stress, but he's started to eat and to clean himself, which is a good sign."

Mr Palmer said: "Somebody must have seen or heard somebody do it and I would urge them to get in touch."
