THE funeral of a North-East teenager who drowned while on holiday in Scotland took place yesterday.

Adam Shad, 15, had been on holiday with his mother Jeanette, brother Joseph, and stepfather Terry, when he drowned in a river near Loch Lomond.

He was seen climbing a hill opposite a campsite at Ardlui, where the family was staying.

The family had spent a week fishing, rowing and relaxing in the waters around the loch, and decided to stay on, despite originally planning to return home on Tuesday.

It is thought Adam had been trying to swim the short distance between Cruach Hill and the campsite, but bad weather hit, which would have created treacherous undercurrents and fast-flowing water.

His body was recovered two days later, on August 7.

More than 100 search and rescue workers launched a hunt around the hills and waters of Loch Lomond when he was reported missing.

Adam would suffer blackouts and frequently become disorientated after he was involved in a car crash in December, during which he suffered serious head injuries.

He was cremated at Saltwell Crematorium, in Gateshead, yesterday, and his family said they will travel to Scotland to scatter his ashes in the hills around Loch Lomond, where they said he was most happy.
