A North-East museum is offering free admission to families.

The Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle, County Durham, will be offering free access on Saturday, August 30.

Families can view treasures and art exhibitions, and there will also be activities for children.

A food festival will be held on the terrace, with local produce ranging from cakes and pastries to organic meat and vegetables.

A craft fair will be held inside displaying handmade gifts produced by local craftspeople.

The Countryside Agency is holding children's activities on the lawn including a bouncy castle, face painting and educational games. A cookery demonstration, live music, glass engraving and gallery talks will also take place.

Commercial development officer, Louise Stephenson, said: "The day is primarily a celebration of local foods, history and culture, as well as offering a unique chance to experience the museum and its collections."

Thomas Watson Fine Auctioneers, in Darlington, and the Countryside Agency, are sponsoring the event.

Refreshments are available and picnics in the park are welcome.
