DURHAM Cathedral is getting a summer clean-up, thanks to the help of a small army of volunteers.
People from across the UK and abroad arrived in Durham to help with maintenance work on the city's World Heritage Site. They are given a variety of tasks from dusting and painting to cleaning pigeon droppings from the top of the cathedral tower.
The volunteers are staying at Durham School and will leave on Wednesday, after spending seven days in the city.
Bob Matthews, clerk of works, said: "Basically, this week is for young people and volunteers who choose the cathedral they want to come to. We set them a variety of tasks to do every year, but there is always the age-old task of cleaning pigeon mess from the tower."
