RESIDENTS are being asked their views on the future of Durham City Council's biggest flats complex.

The council has plans to modernise the 54 flats at Churchill Square, Gilesgate.

But first it is asking tenants whether other action, ranging from greater security and refurbishment to demolition, should be taken.

The council has hired consultants, costing £8,000, to carry out the consultation.

The flats have suffered from crime despite security cameras and increased crime prevention measures including security doors and locks.

Cabinet member for housing, Dennis Southwell, said the design of the flats made maintenance difficult.

The modernisation was due to begin early next year but has been deferred for a few months pending the outcome of the consultation.

"Nothing has been decided. There's a lot of money, £351,000, to be spent on the flats. If it is spent there's no going back and the flats will be there forever," he said.

"I want the residents of Churchill Square to have a better future than they have at the moment.''

Councillor Southwell said that residents might call for the flats to be demolished and new homes built.

If the flats are refurbished residents will be moved into alternative accommodation while the work is carried out.

A consultation event has already been held and another is planned for Wednesday, at 6pm, in Gilesgate Sports College.
