BUILDINGS in Darlington are benefiting from a £400,000 grant.
Work has begun on improving properties in Northgate and High Northgate as part of the national Heritage Economic Regeneration scheme.
Earlier this year, businesses in the area were told they could apply for English Heritage money to pay for up to 60 per cent of the cost of approved building works and 75 per cent for historical reinstatement work.
The first property to benefit has been 29 High Northgate, where the traditional frontage is being reinstated.
Councillor David Lyonette, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: "The High Northgate and Northgate area of the town has immense potential.
"By working together with property and business owners we can improve the area, help to maintain local employment, provide new homes and encourage inward investment."
