RESIDENTS are putting their backs into creating a safe play area for children in the neighbourhood.
A workforce has been recruited from the ranks of unemployed residents on the Park End estate, Middlesbrough.
The workers have all received training and are now creating a £100,000 outdoor play project which will include an area for skateboarding and a games court.
Work was formally launched by Ashok Kumar, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, yesterday.
He said: "A community is not only bricks and mortar. It's the natural surroundings that people live within, and the need to make sure that those surroundings are, at the same time, stimulating and meet the needs of local people.''
He said the development would help provide a better environment for the estate, while giving youngsters a place to play and exercise.
The MP was joined by local councillor Peter Porley for yesterday's launch.
