TEENAGER Grant Sowerby is flying to the Falkland Islands to help expand its tourism industry.

The County Durham student is one of five volunteers who have been chosen to go to the South Atlantic by Gap Activity Projects.

The educational charity places about 1,400 volunteers from schools and universities in projects in 33 countries around the world.

Grant, 18, a former pupil at Spennymoor Comprehensive School, will live in the Falklands for six months to work on the promotion of game fishing, and other outdoor activities, including horse-riding and sailing.

It is a challenge he is looking forward to before returning to England to study computing at Teesside University.
