Police were last night examining security camera pictures from a top London hotel where a group of Premiership footballers are accused of gang-raping a teenager.

The 17-year-old girl claims she consented to sex with one player but was then attacked by others.

She reportedly says up to eight players were present during the attack at a five-star hotel in the capital's West End.

None of them have been named by police but rumours about their identities are flooding the Internet.

One of the accused players, a household name, is understood to deny even being at the hotel.

The others are also believed to be adamant they did nothing wrong.

Forensic teams from Scotland Yard have been examining rooms at the hotel for DNA evidence.

The alleged victim said the attack happened in the early hours of the morning after the players had been on a night out.

She went to a central London police station to report her allegations at the weekend and has spoken to detectives from Scotland Yard's specialist Operation Sapphire unit, which deals with sex crime.

The teenager has undergone a medical examination and had counselling.

She is expected to give a fuller statement to police later, after which the players may be interviewed.

No players or clubs have been named by the police.

None of the clubs involved or agents for the accused players have been prepared to comment.

The Premier League and the Professional Footballers Association have also remained silent.

Solicitor Mark Stephens, who has represented many high profile celebrity clients, said he believed in such cases the names of those allegedly involved would leak out.

He said the Attorney General might act to warn the Press about any possible pre-judicial reporting because of the fame of the footballers.
