FROM this newspaper 100 years ago. - For a very considerable time it has been contemplated by the directors of the North-East Railway Company to make Northallerton one of heir greatest goods collecting and distributing centres, but for various reasons the suggested scheme has been held in abeyance. Now, however, it seems the directors have decided to proceed with work, which will involve an outlay of between £400,000 and £500,000. So far all the land required has been secured near Northallerton Station on the west side of the line between Northallerton and Otterington ... On this land large sidings and locomotive sheds will be erected and extended as required, and here will be dealt with the whole of the main goods traffic on the system.

From this newspaper 50 years ago. - Pigeon racing enthusiasts in Darlington will learn with pleasure that the Town Council has decided that Council house tenants may keep pigeons if they are genuine members of racing clubs. A good many Councils absolutely ban pigeons on council estates, and it has to be admitted that pigeons have certain obvious disadvantages if they are present in very large numbers ... Those who disapprove of such pets might consider that many of the objections which they raise against pigeons could be urged with equal force against dogs, upon the keeping of which Councils rarely impose any restrictions.

From this newspaper 25 years ago. - Mr J B Allison, a well known farmer of Moor House, Marske, Swaledale, had high praise for the Swaledale Fell Rescue Team who recently returned one of his cows which was taken suddenly ill and fell 70 yards down a wooded ravine. No way could be found to rescue the animal without specialist help and the rescue team with Mr M Salmon in charge and with the help of Mr Tom Guy and Mr Robert Packam of Weighills Garage, Reeth, brought the animal to safety. This is the first time that the team had been called to rescue a cow.
