AN out-of-school club has been awarded a grant for new equipment.

The club at Woodham Burn Infants School in Newton Aycliffe, was set-up in January to provide extra care for school children aged three-to-11-years.

Woodham Burn now provides care for pupils from any school in the town from 7.45am to 6pm, as well as all holidays except bank holidays.

The club is run by manager Kendra Green and her deputy Liz Jones, with other members of staff. They plan the curriculum, which includes learning opportunities and external visits, all of which the children are actively involved in.

Headteacher Pat Henderson said establishing the club proved to be a difficult task.

She said: "It was the hardest thing I've ever done because we were working amongst so many different agencies and at that time there was no co-ordinated approach to it.

"Although it was set-up for children from Woodham Burn Infants and Juniors, it's now expanded to most Newton Aycliffe schools. It's becoming extremely popular. "

The club recently received a grant of £928 from the National Lottery Awards for All scheme to allow it to buy specialist equipment which will be of particular help in including physically disabled children in all activities.

Mrs Henderson said the fact that the club is based in school helps it make the most of facilities there and has helped reduce vandalism.

She said: "The staff and parents are delighted with the service that's offered and it really supports the belief that we are here to support the family and the principle that together we are here to support the children."
