A theatre group for youngsters in Teesdale has received an award for its work.

The self-funded Teesdale Youth Theatre, based in Staindrop School, was presented with the award by Investing in Children, an organisation set up by Durham County Council.

Artistic director Jane Crawford, helped by member Katie Brown, said Teesdale Youth Theatre consisted of about 20 members, aged from ten to 17, from all over Teesdale.

The group stages one or two modern or classic performances per year, and is run by a committee formed by members' parents.

Rosie Cross, arts development officer for Teesdale District Council, and Helen Mulhern, of Investment in Children, presented the award to theatre member Jennifer Cartwright, 15.

Anthea Tallentire, chairwoman of the youth theatre, said: "We are delighted with this award. It puts the youth theatre on the map."

Miss Cartwright, of Barnard Castle, designed the group's website www.geocities.com/drama_youth, and gave a short talk about its features.

Teesdale Youth Theatre meets on Mondays, at 6pm, usually for ten sessions per term.
